Most construction teams already have drone photos. What they usually do not have is a record they can use. The difference is not the aircraft. It is whether the capture was planned to be repeatable, and whether anyone decided in advance what the output was for.
The problem with photos
A superintendent walks the site with a drone, takes some overhead shots, and drops them in a folder. Six months later there is a dispute about when a slab was poured or how much material was moved, and those photos cannot settle it. They were taken from different heights, at different angles, on different days, with no consistent frame. You can look at them. You cannot compare them and you cannot measure them.
Documentation that holds up has three properties. It is captured the same way every time, it carries position information, and it is dated and logged. That is a different flight, not a different camera.
Across the project
Preconstruction and due diligence. What is actually on the site before anyone mobilizes: existing structures, access points, drainage, adjacent conditions, encroachments. A current capture beats a plan drawing that is two years old, and it establishes a baseline for anything that gets argued about later.
Earthwork. This is where aerial capture pays for itself fastest. Surfaces captured at intervals give cut and fill volumes and stockpile quantities without a crew walking the pile with a rod. Repeated monthly, it produces a defensible record of material movement over the life of the job.
Vertical construction. Progress documented from fixed waypoints, so month three overlays month one and the sequence is legible. Roof and upper-level conditions inspected without a lift. Trade coordination supported by a current picture rather than a described one.
Owner and lender reporting. A monthly package that shows real progress is far more persuasive than a narrative update. For projects with draw schedules tied to completion, this is often the highest-value deliverable on the list.
Closeout and dispute record. Dated, logged capture of what was built and when. Most of the value here is invisible until it is needed, and then it is considerable.
What repeatability actually requires
Three things, and all of them are set before the first visit.
- A fixed flight plan. The same altitude, the same grid, the same waypoints on every return. Flown by hand, no two visits match.
- Position correction. Imagery georeferenced as it is captured, so the maps stack instead of drifting.
- A schedule. Monthly is the common interval. What matters is that it is consistent, because the value is in the comparison rather than in any single visit.
Set those up once and every subsequent visit is cheap. That is also why recurring work is quoted on a schedule rather than at the single-visit rate.

What it does not replace
Worth being direct about this, because overselling drone capture is common in this industry.
It does not replace a licensed land surveyor. Boundaries, surveys of record, and stamped deliverables are the surveyor's work. Aerial capture supports that work and often reduces how much of it is needed, but it does not substitute for it.
It does not replace inspection by a qualified person. Aerial imagery finds candidates for inspection. It does not certify a structure.
It does not see through tree canopy. Vegetated ground needs LiDAR.
Working on an active site
A few practical things that make the difference between a smooth visit and a wasted one.
- Safety orientation. We attend the briefing and work inside your existing site safety plan rather than around it.
- Coordination with the superintendent. Five minutes before the flight about active lifts, crane movement, and where crews are working.
- A short pause helps. Vehicles and equipment moving during capture appear in some frames and not others. A site that can hold traffic for the flight window produces a noticeably cleaner map.
- Wind cancels. Not rain, usually. Beyond a certain point the flight does not produce usable data and gets rescheduled at no charge.
- Airspace. Most sites clear quickly. A minority sit close enough to an airport to need a longer approval, which is identified when you send the address rather than on the morning of the flight.
Getting a number
Send the site address or a boundary file, the interval you want, and what the output feeds into. Recurring schedules are quoted annually with a fixed per-visit rate, a delivery calendar, and consolidated invoicing. Published starting prices are on the pricing page.
Frequently asked questions
How often should a site be flown?
Monthly suits most vertical projects and most owner reporting cycles. Active earthwork often justifies more frequent capture while material is moving. Anything less often than quarterly loses most of the comparison value.
Can you work around an active site without shutting it down?
Yes. Flights are planned around active work areas, and non-participating people are not overflown. A brief pause in vehicle traffic improves the data but is not required.
Do you provide volume calculations we can bill from?
Volumes are calculated from the captured surface and delivered with the map and the capture report. How they are used commercially is between you and the other party to the contract. Where the number carries contractual weight, projects commonly have a surveyor verify it.
What about sites near an airport?
Most of the Los Angeles basin can be cleared, often the same day. Sites requiring a longer approval are identified before scheduling. See where we work.
